Painting with Watercolors

We went to the Brooklyn Promenade to paint with watercolors. We walked over the bridge to get there and it was beautiful. We saw the whole city from both sides. The building, water,and bridge looked so nice, and the view was wonderful. I am not a drawer but I wanted to draw everything because it was so nice. I never saw the city from that view and now I know how beautiful my city is. Fara taught us how to us the watercolors and not to use alot of paint because it wasn't needed. She told us how to use the brush, the paint, and the water to make our picture. She taught us how to use the brush to make different patterns on the paper to show water, the sky, and grass. I painted the sky, the water, a boat, and the land in the distance. I thought mine came out alright but when Fara showed everyone my picture from far it really looked like something. I enjoyed it and wanted to do more, it was a really nice experience.

The Ferry Ride

When we went on the Ferry it was a nice experience the weather was great and we all had a nice time. We took pictures every two minutes of the sky line to show us getting further and further from it. We than got off the Ferry in Staten Island and got back on going to to New York.

My Cardboard Built Building

This is a picture of the building I did in cardboard it is way different from the Bryce model and also from how I pictured it in my head. I did it this way because it was easier and thing's came to me while I was creating it. My building is an apartment building that has a in-door pool and playground inside. It has two pools inside and alot of grass outside and trees. It is very nice and affordable and in a nice area.

This is my bryce building from a second angle. That is located near ground zero and would be a good tourist attraction because of the design.

Frank Gehry has many monumental works. One of which is the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. This is an extraordinary titanium covered building. He has also done the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, which was completed in 1990. The Walt Disney Concert Hall was another major accomplishment. The space is designed to have an orchestra and a gallery.

Frank has also created the Dancing House, which is an office building in downtown Prague, Czech Republic. This building was built from 1994-1996. The style was a non-traditional design and was controversial but stood out. There is a French restaurant on the roof, which gives beautiful views of the city.

Frank Gehry is a distinguished Professor of Architecture at Columbia University in NYC and also teaches at Yale University. He is considered a modern architect icon and celebrity. He has many works in progress, like the Atlantic Yards in NYC, Performing Arts Complex at the World Trade Center, Beekman Tower in NYC, and The Grand Avenue Project in Los Angeles, California, just to name a few.

Frank Gehry now in his mid seventies and has made a difference across the seas and is still planning to make a change. Frank Gehry’s post modernist architectural style is very unique and personal and has changed how we look at architectural design.

Some more of Frank’s early works are the Guggenheim Museum in Balboa. It is built on a former container and storage site and is built of sheet titanium. This piece of artwork has three main floors and it’s scale like titanium-sheathing gives it is fishlike look. Frank also designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California; it has a gallery and an orchestra deck. Its billowing wood ceiling gives it an acoustic sound.

The architectural style Frank Gehry has is based on his childhood and the times he was bullied and called “fish”. He does a lot of art with a scale like design and incorporates steel and titanium. He has worked with many people throughout his life, such as Skidmore Owings and Merrill but he made friends with Kenny Price, Ed Moses, and Ron Davis. Frank didn’t feel accepted by his peers because he chose not to follow their rules. When Frank began to receive awards from them, he then felt accepted. His mentor, Frank Shreir was the one that helped him create his first work.

Gaining more and more fame, Frank received many jobs where he has built museums, restaurants, houses, institutes, and office buildings. Each project was a new experience for him, “ I approach each building as a sculptural object, a spatial container, a space with light and air, a response to context and appropriateness of feeling and spirit.”

Frank Gehry attended Los Angeles City College and was a part-time student at University of Southern California. When he became a full-time student. he realized architecture would be a field he would thrive in. After graduation, he joined the Army and his talent was recognized. He designed furniture that reflected his architecture. When he left the service, Frank studied city planning at Harvard University’s Graduate School of design. He only studied there for a year because of the vagueness of the major.

Frank worked for many firms. He went to Europe, and worked in Paris. He worked with artist Andre Remondet and after a year he left and returned to his family in California and created his own firm. Frank O. Gehry and Associates, Inc. was the name of his firm. Frank had 140 employees in eight countries. Little did he know, his main office in Manhattan would expand.

One of Frank’s early works was the pink house that he and his family bought. He redesigned the exterior and used a combination of metals, fencing, concrete, wood, and glass. He also exposed the wooden support beams in the interior. Frank then started to build his reputation slowly, and it began with furniture. Frank earned a name with an affordable furniture line named Easy Edges. Frank designed a second line named Rough Edges; this furniture was expensive because few pieces were made. Frank became more famous when his friend Ron Davis asked for his help. They worked together to build a house with an art studio and incorporated Ron’s art style in it. Frank also began to develop his own style by using natural materials.

Frank Owen Goldberg was born on February 28th 1929, in Toronto Canada. He then moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1950’s. Frank Goldberg was Jewish and Polish and his family was very into their heritage. Frank spent many nights in his Grandmother’s house that seemed like his best friend. Frank’s parents were Thelma and Irving Goldberg. Frank’s father who was born to Polish immigrants lived in Brooklyn. Irving moved to Canada and worked job to job which is when he met his first wife who then became Frank’s mother.

Franks father, Irving, fought for money on the streets and Frank picked that up at a later age. Frank was a boxer and participated in full contact Karate. Frank went to a Hebrew school and was a good student, where he enjoyed math. Frank worked at his grandfather’s hardware store and was amazed at the tools around him. His grandmother would let him take home scraps and they would build cities together. Frank’s family then relocated to Timmins, Ontario where he was bullied because of his religious faith in Judaism. They would call him “fish”, saying he smelled. This discouraged Frank so he decided to drop his religion and explore atheism. Although he was teased, “fish” became the inspiration for some of his creations.

Frank’s father became sick so his family moved to Los Angeles, California. His family was struggling to pay their bills. He worked as a delivery truck man. This way he met Anita Snyder who he married in 1952. This is when he changed his last name with his family’s permission to Gehry. He then had two daughters with his wife, Anita. He divorced Anita in 1966 and got remarried to Berta Isabel Aquilera, an immigrant from Panama in 1976, they then had two sons.

Lipstick Building

The Lipstick Building is brown and is 452 feet, and 138 meters. This building was completed in 1986 and has 34 floors. The building was designed by Johnson/Burgee Architects. The base of the building is on a colonade and the entrance is a postmodern hall. The exterior of it is a continuous wall of red enameled imperial granite, and steel. When I first saw this building I thought that it was nice outside and has a very professional look. It shouldn't be changed because it has a very modern look to it.

Citi Group Building

The Citi Group Building was designed so that there could be room for the ST. Peters church. This building is very sexy because the way it was made. It is very shiny silver and stood out to me alot because of the shape of the building. This buiding has 59 floors, 915ft. and is 279 meters. This building was built between 1974 -1977. Hugh Stubbins Jr. was the architect. He made it a 45 degree angle at the top and stilt like at the bottom. There are no ornaments on this building and just repeated squares. My first reaction to this building was "Wow that's a sexy building", it is tall and stands out. My favorite feature is it's shininess. I wouldn't change anything about this building. I like it just the way it is.

AT&T a.k.a Sony Building

The Sony Building is 37 stories high. The Architect of this building is Philip Johnson and John Burgee (who is less famous), they constucted this building in 1984. The ornament on the top is like a Chippendale Pendiment. It also has an arched entranceway. The architectual design is like Architectual Modernism but many think it is Postmodern Architecture. The building is 648 ft. The building is very nice inside with televisions and it has stores inside also.

My Architect Movie

Louis Kahn made buildings, but his Yale Art Gallery Building, and the British Art Center, which was finished after his death were the nicest buildings. As an architect, Kahn was a good person but didn't think women were equal to men. He would owe builders money because the building was over budget. Architects are artists and have to be good at english because they need to know how to talk well and in complete sentences. They have to be good at Math because you have to have every thing to scale so that a building won't fall over or be crooked. Workers of a well known Architect work at a office, have to listen and be accurate about the buildings the architect wants them to build. Architects have alot of money.

U.N Building

The United Nations Building was founded in 1950. It was built by architect Wallace K. Harrison. This building has 38 floors and is made of thermopane glass. The North and South walls are made up of Vermont Marble and the building has green glass. This building is 38 stories tall. When I saw this building in person for the first time I thought it was okay, it wasn't the greatest building. It should be because it is the United Nations building and it should be extravagant because alot of tourist come to see this building. This building needs to be changed alot. It should be the best looking building around.

Building Big Movie

The Building Big Movie was about the Eiffel Tower. It is a huge skyscraper in France. The city was becoming crowded so buildings were being built for people to work. Many buildings were built out of competition, architects would try to compete their buildings in height. Some buildings like the Empire State building and the Twin Towers had tragic things happen to them. The elevator in the Eiffel tower was built so that people wouldn't have to climb up many stairs.

The Chrysler

The Chrysler Building was founded on May 27,1930 the architect was William Van Alen this building is 1,047 feet and 319 in meters. It has 77 floors. It is a Art Deco Skyscraper which is made of marble, steel, granite, masonry, and metal cladding. The color of the building is greyish silver and the ornaments on the building are eagles based on features that were then being used on the Chrysler automobiles at the time. A repeated shape on the Chrysler building are triangles. When I saw the building in person I thought, "Wow it is amazing it is tall and gorgeous, it shines like emarald city". That's what I love about the building; it is very much different from the others it doesn't look old, it has a very modern look.

The Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building was built in 1902. The two designers were Daniel Burnham, and John Wellborn Root. The height of the building is 285 feet and 87 in meters and there is 22 floors in the building. The style of the building is Limestone Glazed terra-cotta facade and it's skeleton is steel. The color of the building is beige and it is triangular. There are Lion heads as ornaments on this building. When I first seen this building I was asked to draw it and I immediately drew it as if I was in the sky looking down, which was wierd because I was on the ground looking up. My favorite feature is the triangular shape of it because I have never seen any thing like it. I wouldn't change it's features because the building is different.

The First Trip Out

Our first Trip out we walked to Chelsea Piers from the school and went to a gallery to see pictures of some sky scrapers but all of them weren't skyscrapers. The pictures were all taken by Ezra Stoller who died in 2004. The pictures were all in black and white. The one I remember was the JFK airport. There were two pictures of it, one in the day and one at night. Both were very beautiful. We also went to this park that wasn't designed like any ordinary playground it was very different and unique and attractive to anyone kid or adult. We also have seen this dice sculpture that went around in circles and also even stopped. We seen the Roxy Pane sculpture along with the Met life and the Flat Iron building. After all the sight seeing we did, we went to the school and got dismissed from there.

Met Life Building

Name of the building is the Met Life Building. The date it was founded was in 1964. The architects were Napoleon Lebron and sons. The height of the building is 700 feet and 213 meters. There are 52 floors and they wanted to make the building a streamline modern look. The materials they used were limestone and tuckahoe marble.The colors of the building are beige and tan. There is a clock on each of the four sides of the building. The repeated shapes the building has are rectangles, There are many windows on the building. When I first saw the building in person I thought there was only one clock but when I read about it I found out there are four. The building is very tall and a special feature I like on the building are the clocks, I wouldn't change anything on the building because it is nice and it is old.

Hello my name is Laura and I am in summer school in New Design H.S, I am an outgoing person. I like to go to the movies, shop, and I love music. Everyone misunderstands me because I am a shy person but I am a good friend once you get to know me. I'm here for my attendance, I was absent alot because I just had my son in January. He is 4 months now and his name is Jaylen. I love my baby soooo much he is my world and he is also a good baby. Another reason I am here is because of the gym credits I didn't complete. This summer school is better than any other because it's only for 9 days and I hope I passed my ELA regents so that I can Graduate with my class.
